Queen of Sheeba (Scavenger Hunt)

This one was written for The Fifth Estate.

This year’s Queen of Sheeba was refreshingly fresh, breaking away from the norm and the stereotype with which it was being organized the past few years. The coords actually managed to make it interesting and fun even for the people who were too lazy to run around collecting items the Queen demanded. In relation to this, a certain ex Soc-Sec of Saras was heard telling an ex-coord of QOS, “Dude, QoS was revolutionized the moment you were out”. Well, it truly was.

The preliminary event was a novel thing and had the hostels scrambling around to get fundaes on increasing Google search rankings while also causing acres of embarrassment (as the Cul-Sec (lit) put it) to both the Cul-Secs. Lit-soc actually did give back to the society by allocating five points each for a blood donation certificate. The thing that really stood out was the task to remake Rebecca Black’s Friday video. It was pretty amusing to watch the Ganga Soc-Sec standing on a cycle, with a camera, outside the insti bus’ windshield to shoot certain scenes of the videos while Godav and Saras used a tricyle and an auto respectively.

On the D-day there was the usual frenzy of the freshies running around and of the literary secretaries and Social secretaries of the hostels barking out orders. This time, the queen in addition to her outrageous demands for esoteric items, also demanded that certain “tasks” be performed by her minions. As a result the eternal sitcom viewer could finally put his skills to use in the Trivia quiz (finally all those hours wasted watching Gossip Girl paid off), while the foodies had something to look forward to in the burger eating contest. The Cul-Sec (lit) displayed true mettle in the burger eating competition by gulping down 4 burgers and coming second while Prajwal (Godav) stood first with 5 burgers. These combined with the peeling the hardboiled egg, marble picking with chopsticks and the test of tachygraphy added a lot of fun quotient to the event.

We couldn’t help notice that there were a few items on the list that made you wish you had spent the summer in Germany. And Nag, we hope you had fun in the Veltin’s arena Metallica concert. Some of the items on the list had people flocking to Himalaya in search of a needle and (obviously) for flies while a few others had the hostels scheming to take over the world and racking their brains to figure out, a former Queen of England’s, secret. The event also saw the coords making a (sadly) failed attempt to recover one of their stolen bicycles.

Overall, according to the Saarang Security cores, it was one of the fairest QoS ever. Apparently the event cores were locked up and not allowed to venture out into the open, in fear of a possible kidnap and also to prevent bias towards their hostels. To alleviate their boredom during their house arrest our beloved Cul-Sec (lit) sang and danced to the tunes of ‘Baba Black Sheep’.

Finally coming to the results, Mandak placed first while Godav and Ganga secured second and third positions respectively. It was surprising that Ganga and Mandak made it even though they had just 38 and 39 freshies, as freshies are the main work force behind QoS for any hostel. Well, it was good fun and let’s hope this continues for the years to come.
